Christmas in Sheffield 2026: Markets, Lights, Ice Rink and Panto
By Sheffield Weekly

Sheffield is getting a Christmas ice rink again. It's going in Tudor Square, and the council says it's the first rink there in more than a decade. If you've spent the last ten Decembers driving to Leeds or Nottingham for a wobble round a rink, you're off the hook.
The rink headlines what Sheffield City Council calls its biggest Christmas season yet. Councillor Ben Miskell, who chairs its Economic Development, Skills and Culture Committee, promised "bigger, brighter and better than ever" when the council announced the programme. Big words. Here's what's behind them, plus everything else worth booking this year.

The Christmas market (12 November to 24 December)
More than 50 wooden cabins line Fargate, Pinstone Street and The Moor from Thursday 12 November until Christmas Eve, and the council says over 80% of the traders come from Sheffield. Entry is free.
The food menu reads like a festive buffet with no supervision. German sausages, Yorkshire pudding wraps, raclette, churros, toasted marshmallows, mulled wine and hot chocolate. Alpine-themed bars sit among the cabins. There's the Big Wheel too, plus Santa's Grotto, a carousel and the helter-skelter in the family area on Barker's Pool.
According to the market organisers, the cabins open from 10am every day:
- The Moor: until 6pm
- Fargate and Pinstone Street: until 8pm
- Fridays and Saturdays: an extra hour everywhere
- The bars: until 10pm
Published hours differ a little between listings, so check before you plan a late visit.
Our tip? Go on a weekday evening. Saturday afternoons on Fargate in December are a contact sport.
The ice rink and snow slide
The artificial rink sits in Tudor Square, between the Lyceum and the Crucible. A snow slide goes up on Surrey Street, a few minutes' walk away.
We couldn't find confirmed opening dates or ticket prices for either as of 27 October. We'll update this guide once they land. Want to skate before then? iceSheffield on Coleridge Road runs public sessions all year.

Lights, but no big switch-on
Don't wait for a big countdown. The traditional city centre switch-on was last held in 2022. Since 2023 the council has run a festive opening weekend instead, citing crowd safety. The lights still go up, though, across Haymarket, Fargate, Barker's Pool, Surrey Street, Division Street, Pinstone Street, the Peace Gardens and Cambridge Street.
New this year is a Christmas celebration on Devonshire Green on Sunday 15 November, the first time the park has been part of the opening weekend. It runs from 3pm to 6.30pm, with Planet Abba, Taylor Swift tribute Katy Ellis and the Jingle Girls, plus a laser and light show that builds up to the lighting of the trees around the green. According to the council, entry is free but everyone needs a ticket. Tickets went out through Eventbrite on 22 October and have already sold out, so it's returns or nothing.
The day before, Saturday 14 November, the city centre fills up with street entertainers, children's characters, craft activities and local bands.
Out in Stocksbridge, Fox Valley still does a traditional switch-on, also on Sunday 15 November, with a festive market and a countdown. Details are on Fox Valley's events page.
Cinderella at the Lyceum (28 November to 3 January)
Damian Williams is back in a frock. This is his 19th year as the Lyceum's dame, which at this point makes him as much a part of a Sheffield Christmas as the cold. He plays one of the stepsisters alongside Matt Daines, with Ore Oduba as Prince Charming CBeebies favourite Andy Day as Dandini and Rita Simons as the Fairy. Paul Hendy writes and directs.
Sheffield Theatres added an extra week because of demand, so the run now finishes on Sunday 3 January. Tickets start from £15, but many performances have already sold out, so check what's left with Sheffield Theatres or call the box office on 0114 249 6000. Heads up for younger fans: Andy Day isn't in the performances on 2 and 3 January.

Victorian Christmas Market at Kelham Island (5 and 6 December)
Our favourite of the lot. Kelham Island Museum fills up with more than 80 stalls of Sheffield-made goods, with brass bands and carollers on the Music Hall Stage, the Snow Queen on stilts, a street organ, fairground rides for kids and a Santa's Grotto. The River Don Engine, a 12,000-horsepower steam engine, fires up on the hour.
- Saturday 5 December: 10am to 6pm
- Sunday 6 December: 10am to 5pm
- Tickets: adults £8, children aged 5 to 16 £2, under-fives free
There's no parking apart from a few Blue Badge spaces at the Fat Cat, so take the tram to Shalesmoor. When your feet give up, the Millowners Arms is right there. Book on Eventbrite through Sheffield Museums, or pay at the ticket desk on the day.
Christmas at Chatsworth (7 November to 3 January)
Around 40 minutes' drive from the city and worth it. Chatsworth dresses the house for Christmas from 7 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with a light and sound trail in the garden and a Christmas market of more than 100 stalls running until 13 December.
Book your tickets in advance and, if you're driving to the market, your parking too. Chatsworth tells visitors not to travel without a booking, and they mean it. Everything is on Chatsworth's Christmas page.
Free and cheap ways to do Christmas
Not everything needs a ticket. The Winter Garden is free, warm and next door to the market. Walk the lit-up streets from Division Street down to the Peace Gardens and you've done the city's best light show for nothing. For more ideas, try our free things to do in Sheffield guide.
