England vs Mexico 1am Kick-Off: Sheffield Pubs and Bars Open Until 5am

Set your alarms. England face Mexico in the World Cup last-16 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with kick-off confirmed at 1am BST on Monday morning. The 1am slot survived a late wobble, too: with thunderstorms forecast for Mexico City, FIFA gave serious consideration to bringing the game forward by six hours on Friday night before confirming just before midnight that the original time would stand. The UK government has extended pub licensing hours until 5am for the occasion, removing the need for individual venues to apply for extensions. The blanket change covers all pubs and bars across England and Wales.
The match was designated an event of "exceptional national significance" to trigger the legislative power needed to push licensing that far. England head coach Thomas Tuchel, fresh from the 2-1 win over DR Congo in the previous round, made his feelings clear when asked about parents keeping children up for a 1am kick-off. "Write an excuse for school and let them watch football" he told reporters. He went on to say the World Cup arrives every four years and the whole country needs to be behind the team.

Sheffield has plenty of venues throwing their doors open for this one. The pubs below have confirmed they are staying open until the full-time whistle. Things can change, so make sure you check opening times before you head out.
The Hardy Pick
The Hardy Pick on Broadfield Close in the south of the city has the scale and screen setup to handle a big matchday crowd. Opens from 10am daily, so you could theoretically be there long before the 1am whistle.
The Shakey
The Shakey at 196 Bradfield Road in Hillsborough sits a short walk from the home of Sheffield Wednesday, so a football crowd is nothing new here. A proper local for the north-west of the city on a proper Sheffield occasion.
Sword Dancer
The Sword Dancer on Handsworth Road pulls in the east Sheffield crowd and has no shortage of experience with late-night occasions. Plenty of space and sports screens throughout.
The Ball
The Ball on Crookes is a Greene King pub well-placed for the student and young professional end of the city. A sizeable heated beer garden and regular late opening hours already built into its weekend schedule. A 1am kick-off is no great stretch for this place.
Ridgeway Arms
The Ridgeway Arms in Mosborough is a community pub with a large outdoor space and a track record for live entertainment nights. The kind of pub where most people know each other, which on a night like this is no bad thing.
Sherwood
The Sherwood on Birley Moor Road does double duty: pub on one side, dancefloor and nightclub on the other. If England go through, the post-match situation is already sorted.
Belfry
Down in Beighton on the south-east edge of the city, the Belfry is a reliable, friendly Greene King pub with food, live entertainment, and a consistent atmosphere. A good shout for anyone based in that corner of Sheffield.
Steinhaus Sheffield
On West Street in the heart of the city centre, Steinhaus is Sheffield's German beer hall. Bavarian benches, one-litre steins, bratwurst, pretzels, and a dancefloor. Already running past 3am on weekends as standard.
Acorn Inn
The Acorn in Burncross on the northern edge of the city is a community pub with friendly staff, a regular quiz night, and the sort of crowd who turn up and stay. One for the north Sheffield contingent.
Nags Head
The Nags Head on Loxley Road is a Bradfield Brewery pub with one of the finest reputations of any venue on this list. Proper ales, Friday pie days, and a warmly reviewed experience from most people who find the place. The drive out to Loxley is worth it.
Saw Grinders Union
Over in Kelham Island at Globe Works, Saw Grinders Union is one of Sheffield's better independent bars. Cocktails, craft beer, and a courtyard. Less traditional sports pub, more somewhere to watch a historic match in a place with a bit more personality about it.
Little Mester
The Little Mester in North Anston, just over the boundary in the Rotherham borough, is a Greene King community pub with pool, darts, and a loyal local crowd. One for the east and south-east fringe of the Sheffield area.
SYSheffield
SYSheffield at the Steel Yard in Neepsend has been hosting ticketed World Cup screenings throughout the tournament. The Hangr, its main space, runs events on a large LED screen with DJs and street food. A different experience to a traditional pub night - worth checking their listings before heading over.
Peddler Warehouse
Peddler Warehouse on Burton Road in Neepsend is a 7,500 square foot former industrial building with a standing capacity of 800. Home to Sheffield's famous monthly street food market, but also a fully operational event space year-round. For a 1am kick-off, the sheer scale of the place works in its favour.
Viper Rooms
On Carver Street in the city centre, Viper Rooms runs World Cup watch events across two levels, with a basement nightclub and regular late-night hours already in place. More of a night-out venue than a traditional pub, which post-match is arguably what you want.
Network
Network on Matilda Street is a live music and events venue with three stages and multiple bars. Less focused on football, more focused on keeping people in the building until the doors close.
Porter Brook
The Porter Brook on Ecclesall Road in Sharrow is a well-run, consistent pub with a loyal following. Solid food, good beer, and staff who are described in review after review as genuinely welcoming. Less chaotic than some venues on this list - depending on what you're after, that might be the point.
Devonshire Arms
The Devonshire Arms on High Street in Dore is the pick for the south-west of the city. A welcoming village pub setting for a night that will be anything but a quiet one.
Red Lion Inn
The Red Lion Inn on Gleadless Road has put real effort into its community identity - live entertainment, quizzes, rock and roll bingo. The kind of pub where the regulars organise themselves and take a big night seriously.
Kick-off is at 1am. England head to the Azteca ranked fourth in the world and carrying real momentum after beating DR Congo. Mexico have lost only two competitive fixtures at the Azteca, which sits around 2,200 metres above sea level - the altitude is the challenge no one fully prepares for.
Sheffield will be watching regardless. Find your pub, get there early, and let Monday morning take care of itself.
